UPY 2025

The Underwater Photographer of the Year 2025 has been named as Alvaro Herrero (Mekan) from Spain, for his captivating image: "Radiant Bond".

UPY is the world’s most important underwater photography contest. British photographer, Phil Smith was the first Underwater Photographer of the Year, named in 1965. Today, the modern UPY continues that tradition into its 60^th year. This fully international competition attracts entries from all continents, with the results promoted by the mainstream media around the world.

Our entire judging process takes place in one room, with all named judges seeing every single image on the same screen and make every decision together. This doesn’t just produce iconic winners, it also allows UPY to provide entrants with individual feedback on how each of their photos faired, using our bespoke results system.
