UPY 2026 British Waters Wide Angle - Highly Commended
'Devon Blue'
David Alpert
This photo began life in the gym! Holding onto a rope behind a moving fishing vessel while managing a full camera rig was a physical challenge. The camera was pushed hard against my face by the oncoming wall of water, just one finger could be spared - for the trigger. This pod of dolphins were cruising the still, calm water off the North Devon coast. It was a beautiful sunny day. “News got out” that I was in the water and one or two of the more adventurous dolphins made some close passes to check me out. A fantastic experience and not common in UK waters.
Judge's comment: A strong contender from the start, this is a special image for UK waters. Clean reflections and lovely dappled light on the subject lift it straight off the screen to the judges’ eyes. Well worth the physical effort that was needed to keep up with these beautiful creatures.
